How to Watch the PSL Without a DStv Dish in 2026-27

The honest answer for the 2026-27 season is uncomfortable: the cheap escape route most South Africans used has been closed. Showmax — the R69, later R99, mobile plan that carried every Betway Premiership match without a decoder — shut down on 30 April 2026. Since then, every live PSL match sits behind a MultiChoice product of some kind, and the only free-to-air football is whatever the SABC has actually licensed.

What has changed in your favour is the shape of DStv itself. On 17 September 2026 MultiChoice, now owned by Canal+, replaced its package line-up. You no longer need a R799 Premium subscription to watch the league: a R299 streaming package carries the PSL channel, with no dish or installer involved.

Do you need DStv to watch the PSL?

For live, full-match coverage of every fixture: yes, in some form. SuperSport holds the rights, and SuperSport is a MultiChoice channel.

But "DStv" no longer means a dish, a decoder and an installer. DStv Stream is the same content over your internet connection, month to month, on a phone, laptop, smart TV or streaming stick. When this guide says R299 or R399, those are streaming prices. Decoder pricing sits on a separate schedule that was not restructured in the same way — check dstv.com against your own bill before assuming the two match.

The genuinely DStv-free routes are narrower: SABC free-to-air, when a sub-licensing deal exists (the 2026-27 position is unresolved — see below), and cup football, where the SABC has confirmed the 2026 MTN8 on free-to-air television. Anything else advertised as a free PSL stream is not licensed.

Showmax Premier League at R69: what happened to that plan

The R69 figure is still all over search results, and it is now two price changes and one shutdown out of date. The verified timeline:

• January 2024 — Showmax launches a standalone, mobile-only Premier League plan at R69 per month, the first of its kind anywhere.
• 1 May 2025 — the plan rises to R99 per month, and the PSL is added permanently, alongside the Carling Knockout, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. Entertainment Mobile goes R45 to R50, Entertainment (all devices) holds at R99, and the bundles land at R120 and R150.
• 31 March 2026 — Showmax stops taking new subscriptions and renewals.
• 30 April 2026 — the service shuts down. Showmax Originals move into a section of the DStv Stream app; the Hollywood catalogue does not follow.

Canal+, which completed its takeover of MultiChoice in December 2025, closed the platform on cost grounds. Eligible Showmax-only subscribers were offered a DStv Stream migration deal reported at R99 a month for twelve months; that window has passed.

So the R69 plan is a product that no longer exists, and nothing replaces it exactly: there is no mobile-only, football-only, sub-R150 PSL subscription in South Africa as of September 2026.

DStv vs Showmax for soccer — which is cheaper

Showmax was cheaper, decisively, and that is no longer a live comparison. At R99 a month for football on a phone it undercut the DStv packages carrying the same matches by roughly R300 to R700 depending on tier, which is why the plan had the following it did.

The question has changed from "DStv or Showmax?" to "which DStv package is the smallest one that carries the football I actually watch?" For PSL-only viewers that is Select at R299, not Premium at R799.

The cheapest way to watch the Betway Premiership

Prices below are the DStv streaming packages that went live on 17 September 2026, as published by SuperSport.

The cheapest paid route to the Betway Premiership is DStv Select at R299 a month. The R99 Starter package is the trap here — it looks like the budget football option and does not carry the league at all.

If you also want the English Premier League, R399 Sports is the entry point, and the R100 gap between Select and Sports is the cheapest football upgrade on the price list. DStv Premium price increases in 2026 and the alternatives

MultiChoice did not run its customary 1 April increase in 2026 — South African tech press reported the annual adjustment as postponed after the Canal+ acquisition closed. We could not verify the exact 2026 rand movement on decoder packages from a primary MultiChoice price schedule, so treat quoted decoder figures with caution and check your own bill.

What did happen is structural, on 17 September 2026:

• Premium streaming sits at R799 for 130+ channels.
• Compact Plus is closed to new subscribers. Existing customers have been upgraded to Premium at no extra cost, keeping the Compact Plus name on their bill. MultiChoice calls this month-to-month — a courtesy, not a guaranteed price.
• Sport and entertainment have been split. Movies & Series at R500 carries M-Net outside Premium for the first time since 1995, but no premium sport beyond Select's.

For a soccer household the alternative to Premium was not available a month ago: drop to Sports at R399 for the PSL, Premier League and Champions League, or Select at R299 if the Betway Premiership is the whole reason you subscribe. You give up rugby, golf, tennis and motorsport at those tiers — if the Springboks matter in your house, Premium is still the only package that carries them.

How to cancel DStv and still watch soccer

Before cancelling, check whether downgrading does the job. Premium to Select saves R500 a month and keeps every Betway Premiership match. Most people who want to "cancel DStv" actually want to stop paying for rugby, golf and movie channels they never open.

If you do want out, DStv lists these account-management channels on its own help pages: the MyDStv app, WhatsApp support, live chat, USSD, and walk-in service centres. It does not publish a plain-language cancellation article with a stated notice period, so do three things:

1. Ask, in writing or in chat, for the exact date your service ends and whether any notice period applies.
2. Get a reference number and keep the transcript.
3. Cancel the debit order only after the subscription is confirmed cancelled — stopping the payment first creates arrears, not a cancellation.

To keep watching football afterwards: SABC 1 and the free SABC+ app for whatever is licensed free-to-air, plus the SABC's MTN8 coverage. A streaming-only subscription is also easier to stop and restart than a decoder contract, which makes month-on, month-off a legitimate strategy.

Showmax Premier League mobile-only limitations

The limitation that defined the Showmax football plan: it played on one mobile device only. Not your TV, not a browser on a laptop, no casting, one stream at a time. That restriction was the price of the R69, later R99, ticket — MultiChoice used it to stop the plan cannibalising DStv subscriptions in the lounge, and that commercial logic died with the platform, which is why nothing comparable is on sale today.

DStv Stream has no such restriction: the same subscription plays on phones, tablets, browsers, smart TVs and streaming sticks, with multiple streams depending on package. Which PSL matches are free to watch (SABC Sport)

Historically, the SABC has sub-licensed a package of matches from SuperSport. The most recent fully documented arrangement, announced in September 2024, gave the SABC 51 matches: 23 Betway Premiership fixtures, 10 Carling Black Label Cup matches, 12 Nedbank Cup matches and 6 National First Division matches, with league games on SABC 1 on Saturdays.

The 2026-27 position is not that. On 31 July 2026 the SABC confirmed that its sub-licensing agreement with Canal+ had "not yet been finalised", that it would not broadcast the opening fixtures of 1 August 2026, and that it anticipated starting broadcasts around 15 August 2026 if the deal closed. The 30th PSL season opened with no free-to-air coverage at all. The one confirmed free-to-air commitment is the 2026 MTN8, secured under a separate agreement.

We could not verify, as of 22 September 2026, that the league deal has since been signed, and the SABC+ sport section did not list live Betway Premiership coverage when we checked. Do not assume a Saturday match is free until you see it in the SABC's own schedule.

Is the PSL game on SABC today? How to check

Four places, in order of reliability:

1. sabcsport.com/tv/tv-schedule — the SABC's own daily schedule, by channel and time slot.
2. The SABC+ app or sabc-plus.com — free with a sign-up, and the fastest way to see what is live now. A match licensed to the SABC appears here as well as on the channel.
3. SABC 1 listings — the historical home of free-to-air league football, traditionally Saturdays.
4. psl.co.za — for the fixture itself: date, kick-off time and venue.

A useful habit during an unresolved rights period: check on the Thursday or Friday, not on the day. When a deal is in force, the SABC's selections are published in advance; when there is none, the schedule quietly fills with magazine shows such as Soccerzone and highlights packages instead of live football — which is itself the answer.

Where to watch the Soweto derby (Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates)

Kaizer Chiefs against Orlando Pirates is carried by SuperSport like every other league fixture, which in the new line-up means DStv Select (R299), Sports (R399) or Premium (R799), on a decoder or on DStv Stream. SuperSport carries every Betway Premiership match — 240 of them across a 16-team season — so the derby is never missing from the pay-TV schedule.

Free-to-air is the uncertain part. A derby is exactly the fixture a broadcaster picks when it holds a limited selection of matches, so if the SABC's 2026-27 deal is concluded, Chiefs against Pirates is a strong candidate for SABC 1. With no deal confirmed at the time of writing, we cannot promise it will be free.

On the date: the fixtures published on psl.co.za when this guide was written run to 18 October 2026 and include no Chiefs against Pirates league meeting, so check the official fixture list.
