How to Watch South African Soccer Abroad: DStv Stream, the UK and Australia

There is no legitimate way to buy live Betway Premiership football outside Africa in September 2026, because nobody outside Africa has bought the rights to sell it to you. The league's broadcast deal is a sub-Saharan one, held by SuperSport and renewed by its new owner Canal+ in June 2026. And the product the diaspora used to ask about most — Showmax — no longer exists anywhere. This guide is about geography: what travels with you, what stops at the border, and what you can legally buy where you now live.

How to watch the PSL in the UK

Short answer: as of September 2026 no UK broadcaster carries it live.

The Premier Soccer League's rights sit with SuperSport. On 3 June 2026, Canal+ Group — which now owns MultiChoice — extended that agreement with the National Soccer League, covering the Betway Premiership, the MTN8, the Carling Knockout, the Nedbank Cup and the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The territory named in that announcement is sub-Saharan Africa. No European, British or Australian partner appears in it.

SuperSport broadcasts all 240 Betway Premiership matches live, reaching South African viewers through DStv and DStv Stream. Both are African products. UK sites carrying Betway Premiership fixture pages — TNT Sports, for instance — publish scores and tables, not live video.

So what does a South African in Britain actually get?

Free-to-air, when a South African club goes continental. In May 2026 Mamelodi Sundowns beat AS FAR over two legs to win the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League. CAF's own broadcaster list for that final named Channel 4 as the UK platform, alongside beIN Sport, CANAL+, DAZN and SuperSport elsewhere. Channel 4 is free, and this is the most reliable route Britain has to a South African club in a showpiece match.

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are South Africa's 2026/27 CAF Champions League entrants; Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City are in the CAF Confederation Cup. Whether Channel 4 takes anything beyond a final is not announced in advance, so treat it as a fixture-by-fixture check, not a season pass.

Bafana Bafana. The national team is a different rights market, and a generous one. South Africa reached the 2026 World Cup, drew Mexico, South Korea and Czechia in Group A, and beat South Korea 1-0 to reach the Round of 32 before going out to Canada. Tournament football is sold to free-to-air broadcasters almost everywhere. The domestic league is not.

Does DStv work outside South Africa?

Partly — and the dividing line is not "South Africa", it is "sub-Saharan Africa".

MultiChoice's own DStv Stream terms describe the service as operating "across several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and the adjacent Indian Ocean Islands". The rest-of-Africa document excludes users in Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria and South Africa, because each has its own contract. DStv is a continental service with per-country catalogues, not a global one.

Two clauses decide what happens when you travel.

Clause 3.5 of the DStv Stream terms: "Users may access Content via DStv Stream primarily within the country in which they have established their account. Limitations may apply to accessing Content in a foreign country."

The older DStv Now terms, still the clearest statement MultiChoice publishes: "The viewing of Video Content in DStv Now shall be limited to DStv Territories. Access to the DStv Now Video Content is limited to the Video Content of the country in which the Customer's account is held regardless of where the Customer and/or User is physically located."

"DStv Territories" means any country where MultiChoice or an affiliate provides the service to the public. Nairobi is a DStv Territory. Accra is. Manchester is not. Melbourne is not. The South African terms for adding a stream are blunter still: you qualify only with an active DStv subscription "for your private use in South Africa".

One genuine allowance sits in the same paragraph as the restriction: "Video Content downloaded within the DStv Territories can be viewed anywhere in the world." Downloads made before you fly travel with you. Live football does not download, so this helps with catch-up, not kick-off.

MultiChoice has never published a travel window, grace period or holiday allowance for viewers outside its territories. We looked. There isn't one.

Does Showmax work outside South Africa?

It no longer works anywhere. Showmax shut down completely on 30 April 2026.

Most diaspora guides still get this wrong, so the sequence matters. Showmax first withdrew from the international market on 1 December 2023, telling subscribers it "will no longer be available outside of sub-Saharan Africa" and relaunching as a 44-market African service. That retreat did not save it. Canal+, having taken control of MultiChoice, bought out NBCUniversal's 30% stake and then closed the platform; TechCentral's sign-off piece, "Goodbye, Showmax", ran on 30 April 2026. From 1 April 2026 MultiChoice was already steering departing subscribers onto DStv Stream with a 67% discount on DStv Stream Compact.

So if you emigrated and lost Showmax, you did not lose it because you emigrated. Everyone lost it.

What replaced it for South African football is DStv Stream, and that matters for price. On 17 September 2026 MultiChoice rebuilt the line-up: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series and Premium replaced Access, Family, Compact and Compact Plus. DStv Select, at R299 a month on DStv Stream (R339 on satellite), is now the cheapest tier carrying the PSL channel — the role the old R69 Showmax Premier League plan used to play. Sports, at R399 on Stream and R479 on satellite, adds the Champions League and T20 cricket.

DStv Stream is not a rescue for anyone reading this overseas. It inherits Showmax's geography rather than fixing it: the territory clauses above apply, so a Select subscription bought in Johannesburg is a Johannesburg subscription. There is now no MultiChoice product of any kind sold outside sub-Saharan Africa.

How to watch Kaizer Chiefs from Australia

Australia is the hardest of the major diaspora markets, for a simple reason: there is no Australian rights holder for South African domestic football, and no African pay-TV operator selling into Australia.

The honest inventory for an Amakhosi supporter there in September 2026:

Betway Premiership and the domestic cups: no legal Australian purchase exists. The Canal+/SuperSport deal stops at sub-Saharan Africa, and Showmax — which some older guides still list as the workaround — is closed.

CAF competitions: Chiefs are in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup. CAF's broadcaster list for the 2025/26 Champions League final named beIN Sport for the MENA region "including France, United States of America and South-Pacific" but named no Australian broadcaster, and beIN Sports Australia's own football line-up lists the CAF Africa Cup of Nations without the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup. AFCON is a confirmed beIN Australia property; club continental football is not. We could not open a beIN page carrying its current Australian price, so check that at sign-up.

Bafana Bafana: the World Cup and AFCON are sold worldwide and are the one category that reliably reaches Australian screens.

Club-published content: Kaizer Chiefs' official YouTube and social channels, and the PSL's own, publish highlights, reaction and press conferences with no geo-block. Free, and they travel. They are not the match.

What most people end up doing: keeping the household DStv account funded back home, and following highlights and live text in Australia. Not a workaround — just what the rights map allows.

Why DStv Stream stops working overseas — and what actually fixes it

The error you get is not a bug and not an app problem. It is the licence.

MultiChoice buys the right to show SuperSport football in specific countries, which is why the Canal+ renewal names sub-Saharan Africa rather than "the world". Open DStv Stream from a foreign IP address and the platform finds you outside the licensed footprint and stops. It behaves identically for a fully paid-up subscriber, because payment was never the question.

Three things genuinely change the outcome:

1. Subscribe where you live, if where you live is in Africa. A South African in Lagos, Nairobi, Accra or Gaborone can simply buy DStv or GOtv locally. SuperSport carries the Betway Premiership across the continent under the same Canal+ deal — local account, local prices.
2. Download before you fly. The terms permit content downloaded inside a DStv Territory to be viewed anywhere in the world. Useful for magazine shows and replays; useless for live.
3. Follow the competitions sold internationally. CAF club finals and the national team are the South African football that crosses borders, and they are frequently free-to-air where they land.

On VPNs, plainly. Most services' terms prohibit disguising your location, and MultiChoice's are no exception: the DStv Stream terms bar users from using "technology or other means to remove, disable, bypass, or circumvent any protection mechanisms", and clause 13 makes non-compliance a material breach entitling MultiChoice to terminate your access. Accounts can be suspended. We will not walk you through circumventing a geo-block and we recommend no VPN for it.

The legal routes, country by country

Prices are as at September 2026 and, where they are in rand, reflect DStv's package restructure that took effect on 17 September 2026.

Can I watch the PSL in the UK legally?

Not live. No UK broadcaster holds Betway Premiership rights as of September 2026, and the league's own rights deal covers sub-Saharan Africa. Channel 4 carried the 2025/26 CAF Champions League final free, which is the closest thing Britain has to South African club football on television.

Does my DStv subscription work when I travel?

Only inside DStv Territories — the sub-Saharan African countries where MultiChoice sells the service. The terms state access is limited to the content of the country where your account is held, wherever you happen to be. Content you downloaded inside a DStv Territory can be viewed anywhere in the world.

What happened to Showmax?

It closed. Showmax left the international market on 1 December 2023 and then shut down entirely on 30 April 2026, after Canal+ bought out NBCUniversal's minority stake. Any guide still recommending the Showmax Premier League plan is out of date.

What is the cheapest way to watch the Betway Premiership now?

In South Africa, DStv Select at R299 a month on DStv Stream since the 17 September 2026 restructure. Outside sub-Saharan Africa there is no paid route.

Should I use a VPN?

We do not recommend it and we will not explain how. MultiChoice's terms prohibit circumventing its protection measures and treat a breach as grounds for terminating your access. There is also no SuperSport product sold outside Africa to subscribe to in the first place.

Bottom line

South African domestic football is a sub-Saharan product, and leaving the continent means leaving the rights map — a point made sharper by Showmax's closure on 30 April 2026. If you have moved to another African country, buy DStv or GOtv locally and nothing really changes. If you have moved to the UK, Australia, North America or the Gulf, accept that the Betway Premiership is not for sale to you, and build your season around the two things that cross borders: CAF club competitions, free-to-air in the UK when Channel 4 takes them, and Bafana Bafana at major tournaments.
