How to Watch US Sports From Abroad: Blackouts, VPNs and What Actually Works

If you are outside the United States and want to watch American sport, the honest answer is that you probably do not need the thing you came here to search for. The leagues sell their own international products, those products are usually cheaper abroad than the American version, and in the NFL's case the international package is better — it carries every game with no blackouts, which the US product does not.

The search term "best VPN for watching sports abroad" is popular because people assume the wall is absolute. Mostly it is not. What follows is the legitimate route for each league, what it costs in real currencies as of September 2026, why the walls exist, and what services' own terms say about disguising your location.

How to watch the NFL from abroad

NFL Game Pass is not sold in the United States. It exists only outside it, and outside it, it is excellent.

Since 2023 the NFL's international streaming rights have sat with DAZN, under a ten-year agreement running through the 2032 season. NFL.com describes Game Pass as "available internationally only on DAZN in more than 200 markets." The US equivalent, NFL+, is a much smaller product — in-market games on mobile, plus replays and RedZone on the premium tier. Game Pass carries every regular-season game live, the International Games, the playoffs and Super Bowl LXI, plus condensed replays, NFL RedZone and the NFL Network channel. The Ultimate tier adds multiview (four games at once), HDR on select games, Dolby surround and a 15% merchandise discount.

One caveat the NFL states plainly: some blackout restrictions apply in the UK and Ireland. Everywhere else, every game is live.

These are DAZN's own published season prices. Prices shown are the standard Season Pro tier unless noted.

Canada works differently. There is no separate Game Pass to buy — NFL coverage is bundled into a standard DAZN subscription. DAZN did not publish a Canadian dollar figure on the page we checked, so confirm the current CAD rate at sign-up.

How to watch the Premier League outside the UK

The Premier League sells its overseas rights market by market, currently on a three-season cycle covering 2025/26 through 2027/28. There is no single global subscription. Your country has one official home, and it is usually obvious once you know to look for it.

United States. NBCUniversal holds the rights through 2028 in a cycle reported at £2 billion, split across Peacock, NBC and USA Network. Peacock raised prices on 18 August 2026 for new subscribers, with existing ones moving to the new rate on or after 17 September. Which matches stream live on Peacock versus needing a pay-TV login shifted during 2026 after NBCUniversal's cable spin-off, and we could not verify the current split from a primary source — check the fixture on Peacock's schedule. Canada. Fubo retains exclusive Canadian rights under a multi-year deal that began in 2025/26, and the Premier League sits in its Sports tier. Fubo's Canadian line-up and pricing both changed during 2026. The clearest dated figure we could verify is Fubo Sports Pro at CA$54.99 a month or CA$449.93 a year (October 2025); cheaper Sports-tier rates near CA$31.49 a month were quoted in September 2026, but we could not open Fubo's own Canadian pricing page to confirm them. Check fubo.tv before paying.

Australia. Stan Sport carries all 380 matches. It is a A$20 per month add-on requiring an active Stan base subscription — A$9.99 with ads, A$17.99 Standard, A$23.99 Premium — so the real cost is roughly A$30 to A$44 a month.

India. All 380 matches are live on JioHotstar, with television coverage on Star Sports Select 1 HD. JioHotstar's plans changed on 28 January 2026: Mobile ₹79/month, ₹149/three months, ₹499/year; Super ₹149, ₹349, ₹1,099; Premium ₹299, ₹699, ₹2,199. Live sport stays ad-supported on every tier, including Premium.

Indonesia. Emtek holds the rights through 2027/28, showing matches on Vidio and free-to-air on SCTV. Premier League sits in Vidio's Ultimate pack: Rp115,000 for 30 days mobile, Rp259,000 for three months, Rp859,000 for a year; all-devices plans are Rp215,000, Rp499,000 and Rp1,549,000. Apple in-app purchase prices run higher.

Can you use NBA League Pass from another country?

Yes — and it is a genuinely different product from the American one, in your favour on blackouts and usually in your favour on price.

Price changes a lot. The NBA prices League Pass market by market. When we opened NBA.com's pricing page from an Indonesian connection in September 2026, it quoted Rp135,000 a month for League Pass and Rp200,000 a month for League Pass Premium — roughly $8 and $12. For comparison, the US 2026-27 rates published in September 2026 are $21.99 a month or $149.99 a season for Standard and $28.99 or $199.99 for Premium. We could not confirm those US figures from NBA.com itself, because the site serves a different price page depending on where you open it, so treat them as the published secondary figure and check at sign-up.

Blackouts change too. The American product blacks out nationally televised games — ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock and Prime Video fixtures are unavailable live on League Pass and appear after 6:00am ET the next day. Outside the US, those national-telecast blackouts are not the constraint. But "no blackouts anywhere" is an overstatement you will see repeated a lot. The NBA's own Terms of Use for subscribers outside the USA say blackouts "may apply to a Service depending on the date of the applicable game, your location and local, national and international broadcast exclusivities." In plain terms: if a broadcaster in your country holds exclusive rights to a game, League Pass may not carry it there. The same terms exclude mainland China entirely.

Why sports are blacked out at all — the rights map, explained in plain words

A blackout is not a technical fault. It is a contract working correctly.

Leagues do not sell "the games." They sell territories. NBCUniversal buys the United States. Emtek buys Indonesia. Stan buys Australia. Each buyer pays on the assumption that it is the only place in that country you can legally watch. If the league's own streaming service also sold those matches there, the buyer would be paying a fortune for something it does not exclusively have — so the league switches its own product off in territories it has already sold. That switch is the blackout.

There are three distinct flavours, and people confuse them constantly:

• Exclusivity blackouts. The most common. Someone local bought the rights, so the league's direct product goes dark there. This is why NFL Game Pass is not sold in the US at all, and why NBA League Pass hides national-TV games from American subscribers.
• Attendance blackouts. Designed to get people into stadiums. The UK's Saturday afternoon closed period is the famous one: under UEFA Article 48.2, no football may be televised in the UK between roughly 2:45pm and 5:15pm on Saturday matchdays, a rule dating to the 1960s and criticised as outdated by a Court of Justice of the European Union Advocate General, among others. The NFL's old local-sellout blackout was the American version, suspended from 2015.
• Regional-protection blackouts. MLB and NHL use these to stop a national feed undercutting the regional networks that pay for local coverage.

Geography, then, shapes your options more than money does. Formula 1 is the cleanest recent illustration: Apple holds exclusive US rights and bundles F1 TV Premium there, while F1 TV operates normally everywhere else. VPNs: what they do, what services' terms say, and the honest risks

A VPN routes your traffic through a server somewhere else, so websites see that server's address rather than yours. Using one is legal in most countries and genuinely useful on hotel and airport Wi-Fi. That is not the question here. The question is what happens when you use one to appear to be somewhere you are not, on a service that checks.

Streaming services check, and they say so. Peacock's own site, opened from outside the US, returns a blunt notice: "Your device must physically be located in the US to stream," and "Peacock is not yet available in your territory." That is the product telling you its licence does not cover you.

The terms are not vague. The NBA's League Pass Terms of Use for subscribers outside the USA state, in capitals: "IF YOU CIRCUMVENT, OR ATTEMPT TO CIRCUMVENT, ANY BLACKOUT RESTRICTION OR OTHER USE RESTRICTION: YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE TERMINATION AND A CHARGE OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100.00) FOR EARLY TERMINATION; AND YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO LEGAL ACTION." The same agreement gives the NBA the right to terminate access immediately on any breach, and restricts use to territories it determines. Other sports services carry comparable clauses.

What we are not going to do here. We will not name servers, providers or configurations that defeat geoblocking, and there are no VPN affiliate links on this page. The honest risks are worth stating instead: your subscription can be terminated with money already paid, the NBA's terms attach a $100 charge on top, payment cards and billing addresses frequently give the game away regardless of IP address, and refunds are not generally offered to accounts closed for a terms breach.

And the practical point that gets lost. A VPN does not create rights. Even working perfectly, it buys you an American product that is often pricier and more blacked-out than the international one the league already sells you. NFL Game Pass abroad carries every game; NFL+ at home does not. NBA League Pass in Jakarta costs around a third of the US price. The workaround is usually the worse deal.

Is it illegal to use a VPN to watch sport?

In most countries a VPN itself is legal. Using one to misrepresent your location to a streaming service is typically a breach of that service's contract with you, not a criminal matter — but the contract is what governs your subscription, and it lets the service close your account.

Why is NFL Game Pass not available in the United States?

Because the NFL sold US rights separately. Game Pass exists only in international markets, on DAZN, under a deal running through the 2032 season. Americans get NFL+ instead, which is a narrower product.

Is NBA League Pass cheaper abroad?

Can I watch the Premier League for free anywhere?

In Indonesia, SCTV carries matches free-to-air alongside Vidio's paid Ultimate pack. Free-to-air arrangements differ by country and season, so check your national broadcaster rather than assuming.

Does the UK 3pm blackout affect me overseas?

No. The closed period applies to broadcasts in the UK. Overseas broadcasters routinely show Saturday afternoon matches that are unavailable on British television.

Bottom line

Start with the league, not with a workaround. NFL Game Pass on DAZN gives international fans every game with no US-style blackouts, from about £18.99 a month in the UK to A$34.99 in Australia. NBA League Pass is priced locally and is often far cheaper outside the US. The Premier League has a named home in every market — Peacock, Fubo, Stan Sport, JioHotstar, Vidio and SCTV among them. Disguising your location breaches most of these services' terms and, in the NBA's case, carries an explicit $100 termination charge, for a product that is usually worse than the one you can buy legitimately.
