Streaming Soccer on Data in South Africa: How Much It Uses and the Cheapest Way

A full 90 minutes of football costs between 150 MB and 3.45 GB of data, and the only thing that decides where you land in that range is the video quality setting in your app. Not the service, not the match, not your phone.

That is the second bill South African viewers pay. The subscription is the one you notice; the data is the one that quietly empties a R99 bundle three matches into the month. This guide is about that second bill only.

One thing has changed the landscape since last season: Showmax closed on 30 April 2026, and its content folded into DStv Stream. MultiChoice then restructured DStv on 17 September 2026 into six tiers. So every figure below is about DStv Stream, because for a paid live PSL stream it is now the route.

How much data does streaming a football match use?

DStv's help page puts the app's floor at 1.15 MB per minute and its ceiling at up to 41 MB per minute at the highest HD resolution — roughly 69 MB and 2.46 GB per hour. Broken out by resolution, using the figures DStv Care publishes and Vodacom repeats on its own data-education pages:

Budget for two hours, not ninety minutes. Build-up, two halves, stoppage time and post-match put you online for close to two hours, so the right-hand column is the honest planning figure.

The jump from 576p to 1080p costs three times the data for a picture you will not see on a phone. Set the quality to match the screen, not the habit.

Showmax data usage per match: what closed, and what it means now

Showmax was the data-cheapest way to watch football in South Africa, and it is worth knowing how cheap, because it sets the benchmark you should now hold DStv Stream to on a phone.

Its published mobile settings were 50 MB per hour on Max Data Saving, 100 MB on Data Saving and 300 MB on Low, against roughly 1.4 GB uncapped. When MyBroadband tested the major platforms on their data-saver settings in late 2024, Showmax came out lowest at about 194.55 MB per hour, ahead of Prime Video at 197.71 MB per hour.

These figures are historical. Showmax stopped renewals in March 2026 and shut down on 30 April 2026, with MultiChoice moving departing subscribers onto discounted DStv Stream. There is no Showmax plan to buy and the app's data settings are gone with it.

What survives is the lesson. DStv Stream's lowest usable setting is about 210 MB an hour — close to what Showmax achieved on its data saver, and roughly a tenth of what DStv Stream uses on its default. The frugal stream was never a different service. It was a different setting.

DStv Stream data-saver settings

DStv does not brand a data saver. What it has is a quality ceiling, described on its help page as settings where "you can select the video quality (ranging from low quality to highest)."

It sits under Settings, in the Maximum Video Quality section, and can also be changed from the player mid-match. The ladder — low, medium, high, highest — maps onto the 360p, 576p, 720p and 1080p rows above. The default is highest, which is 2.3 GB an hour: the most expensive setting in this article, and the one you are on unless you have changed it.

Change it once, on the mobile device, and a 4.6 GB match becomes 420 MB to 1.44 GB. Change it on the TV app and you will notice the difference; change it on a six-inch screen and you will not.

Can you watch the PSL without using data?

Partly. Three routes, and only one is genuinely free.

Free-to-air television. The SABC has historically sub-licensed a Saturday Premiership slot on SABC 1. For 2026/27 the picture is unresolved: the SABC's media release of 31 July 2026 confirmed it would not carry the 1 August opening fixtures, said the sub-licensing negotiation with CANAL+ was still open, and put a hoped-for start date of 15 August on Premiership coverage. That same release did confirm a concluded agreement for the 2026 MTN8, so that competition is free-to-air. We could not verify a concluded 2026/27 Premiership sub-licence as of 22 September 2026 — check SABC Sport's weekly schedule rather than assuming.

Wi-Fi. Fibre and fixed-wireless in South Africa are usually uncapped, so a 4.6 GB match at 1080p costs nothing extra at home. Where the app lets you set quality per connection, use it: uncapped on Wi-Fi, low on mobile data.

Downloads. Do not plan around these for live football. DStv's help page says downloading is "only available on selected devices" and caps you at "a total of 25 titles" per subscription; the language throughout is about titles, meaning Catch Up programmes, not live channels. A live stream cannot be downloaded before it exists. Downloads move highlights, replays and analysis onto Wi-Fi — they are not a way to watch a match live on no data.

Vodacom vs MTN for streaming sport — pricing and night-owl bundles

The two networks approach this differently, and for live soccer one approach is clearly better.

Vodacom pairs anytime data with matching night data. Its Prepaid LTE bundles give a gigabyte of Night Owl data for every anytime gigabyte — 5 GB plus 5 GB for R99, 20 GB plus 20 GB for R229, 100 GB plus 100 GB for R449, all on 30 days. Night Owl data, per Vodacom's terms, is usable "between midnight and 5am."

MTN sells night data separately. Night Express monthly bundles run R139 for 5 GB, R209 for 10 GB and R359 for 20 GB, usable "between the hours of 00h01 and 04h59 only."

Here is what decides it: South African kick-off times do not fall inside either window. The Betway Premiership plays at 15:00, 17:30 and 19:30. A 15:00 Premier League kick-off in England is 16:00 or 17:00 here. Champions League is 21:00 SAST. Night data is dead weight for live football — the exceptions are Libertadores and MLS fixtures, which genuinely do land in the small hours, and overnight highlight downloads.

So compare the networks on anytime data only, and Vodacom's Prepaid LTE ladder wins at every size. Note that it needs a Prepaid LTE or mobile broadband SIM, not a standard prepaid voice SIM, where Vodacom's data is considerably dearer per gigabyte.

MTN also sells a Video Streaming Bundle — 5 GB for R159, 10 GB for R299, 20 GB for R499 on 30 days — zero-rated for named streaming services. Two warnings. First, the published terms still name "Showmax and DSTV Now" and carry dates from 2019, so one of the two services no longer exists and the page has plainly not been revised; confirm with MTN what is actually zero-rated today before you buy. Second, read it per gigabyte and the label stops flattering: R24.95 to R31.80 a gigabyte against R4.49 to R19.80 on Vodacom's Prepaid LTE. A bundle marketed at streaming is not automatically a cheaper way to stream.

The best data bundle for watching soccer in South Africa

Prices as at September 2026, from Vodacom's prepaid plans page and MTN's bundle terms. Personalised offers — Vodacom's Just4You, MTN's app-led deals — vary by SIM and are often cheaper, so check your own app first.

The rule that falls out: buy the largest bundle you will actually finish in 30 days. Going from R99 to R449 quadruples the price and multiplies your anytime data by twenty. For most people watching on a phone at 360p, the R99 5 GB + 5 GB Prepaid LTE bundle is the right answer.

The cheapest overall setup: subscription plus data, costed for a month

DStv's restructure of 17 September 2026 matters here, because the entry tier now carries football. DStv Stream Starter is R99 a month and includes SuperSport KICKOFF, which DStv describes as "one Premier League and two PSL games per week." Stream Select at R299 adds the full SuperSport PSL channel, and Stream Sports at R399 carries "every match of the Premier League, Champions League and the South African Premiership."

Assume a realistic month: eight matches, about two hours each, sixteen hours of live football.

The streaming price is the lower one. DStv lists Starter at R150 on a decoder against R99 on DStv Stream, and Select at R350 against R299. If you are watching on a phone anyway, do not buy the decoder tier.

Two PSL games a week is eight a month. That is exactly the assumption in this table, which is why R99 Starter plus a R99 data bundle — R198 all in — is the genuine floor for paid PSL streaming right now. You step up to Select or Sports for the matches Starter does not carry, not for better data economics.

Leave DStv Stream on its default highest and one match costs 4.6 GB; move it to low and the same match costs 420 MB — an eleven-fold difference for a picture you cannot distinguish on a phone. With Showmax gone since 30 April 2026, the cheapest paid route to live PSL is DStv Stream Starter at R99 alongside a R99 Vodacom Prepaid LTE bundle: about R198 a month for roughly eight matches. Buy the largest data bundle you will finish in 30 days, and watch on Wi-Fi whenever the fixture lets you.
